Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker too!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic party.

Trump's statements coincide with the arrival of state military personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite vehement protests from Illinois authorities including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Johnson responded on Wednesday. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, declaring: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What's next on the path to complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military personnel preparing to mobilize, per sources. Officials reportedly stated the troops would not perform police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in lines. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, sparking demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, state and city filed a lawsuit against the administration, seeking to block the military dispatch, asking a court to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also signed an executive order on that day banning ICE officers and others from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has accused the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on the previous day, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, the president has said he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a president to send regular army in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are defying federal law.

After beginning his second term, the president has sent or mentioned sending military units to at least 10 urban centers, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were down 31% to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on that day revealed that most Americans disapprove of the sending of troops without an external threat.
