The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
